From time to time, sporting events are stopped. The reason behind this can be very different, ranging from bad weather to racist abuse from the audience. In tennis, it happens quite often that a game is interrupted but less likely to get terminated.

This article will walk you through what happens to a bet if a game is stopped. There is a difference between “interrupted” and “terminated” that you need to know before placing a bet or when this happens after you have placed a bet.

What Happens When A Game Is Interrupted

When a game is stopped before it has reached its natural conclusion (i.e., the end of one set for a match between two players, or the end of the game in football), this is labeled as an interrupted game, and bets still stand on all markets offered.

All live bets will remain valid unless you have placed your bet specifically on the game to be terminated if it is interrupted.

If you have placed a bet on the total number of games in tennis, for example, and you pick the ones that are interrupted, then your bet will be refunded if any of these bets are not completed due to an interruption.

Bets that offer odds based on the game ending in a particular way (e.g., game with player A to win) will be void if the match is interrupted after starting, no matter its result.

What Happens When A Game Is Terminated

When a game is stopped before it has reached its natural conclusion (i.e., the end of one set for a match between two players, or the end of the game in football), this is labeled as a terminated game, and bets will be refunded on all markets offered.

All live bets will be void unless you have placed your bet specifically on the game to be terminated if it is interrupted.

What Happens When A Game Is Abandoned

When a game is interrupted and abandoned without reaching its natural conclusion (e.g., the end of one set for a match between two players or the end of the game in football), then bets on all markets offered will be refunded.

All live bets will be void unless you have placed your bet specifically on the game to be terminated if it is interrupted.

Suppose a specific number of games has been agreed for betting purposes, and these were not completed due to an interruption or abandonment. In that case, bets will stand, and the total number of games in tennis, for example, will be calculated based on the result once the play has ended.

To give you one example, for betting purposes, the game between Maria Sharapova and Simona Halep at Indian Wells was considered to go on until there were two more games played because of rain interruption. Then the match was abandoned without reaching the natural conclusion (one set each), resulting in bets void on all markets. However, all bets would have stood if the game had been stopped after two games (one set each).

The rules that apply for sports bookmakers are different for live betting operators. If you place your bet on an event that is terminated, your stakes are returned to your account automatically; however, if you place a bet on an interrupted and later on terminated, you will still receive a refund.
